- situated on the South Hemisphere, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans

History

    - Australia was discovered by Captain James Cook
    - it became a British colony and also a prison
    - immigration increased when a gold was found there
    - It became a British dominion
- the real head of state is the Prime Minister, formal head of state is the British Queen
